This week I could almost feel a fall coolness in the air – well, at 9 a.m. anyway. Nevertheless, it felt amazing and it’s really pumping me up for fall. So funny because I’m always so ready for summer and hot weather, but then once I endure the brutal weather of a southern summer, I yearn for my tights and booties again. Le sigh…we’re never happy, right? But really and truly fall is my fav fashion season by far – the coats! the boots! the bags! I love it all, and two of Glamour‘s fashion editors Tracey Lomrantz and Laurel Pantin have their first collection on OpenSky (an amazing shopping site I adore!).
Each week they’ll teach you easy ways to change up your look with just a few key accessories from Tracey’s Neon and Neutral collection to Laurel’s Neo-Western. We were lucky enough at I Heart Heels to ask Laurel a few fun questions, so let’s get started!
I Heart Heels: What’s one to-die-for piece from your collection?
Laurel Pantin: I’m in love with the funky cuff from my collection. I love that it doesn’t scream cowgirl! but it still gives that Western feel.
IHH: What’s the easiest way for anyone to go from drab to fab in an instant?
LP: My advice is to have one (or 100) go-to accessory that makes you feel super confident whenever you wear it. It could be a pair of shoes, a statement necklace, a pair of sunglasses, or anything, but something about it should feel special to you and wearing it should make you feel like you’ll stand out of the pack.
IHH: Why is accessorizing so key, and are accessories in general a splurge or save item for you?
LP: The great thing about accessories is they’re easy to switch out, but they can completely transform your outfit and your mood. Accessories also let you test-drive different trends without having to fully commit to a look. I’d never wear a frothy princess dress, but a tiara-esque rhinestone necklace? Bring it! I try not to categorize items into “splurge” or “save.” I think if you love something and it makes you feel terrific, you should buy it whether it’s $5 or $500—just so long as you can afford it! I do believe in living within your means. Now if I could just do it!
“I think the most important thing is to be comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing.” — Laurel Pantin, Associate Shopping & Market Editor, Glamour
IHH: What brands should we look to for perfecting our fall look?
LP: I love shopping at places like Topshop, Asos or H&M for super-trendy clothing pieces each season. I think it’s pointless to invest in the “so hot right now” items that you probably won’t be able to wear beyond the season. The same goes with shoes, jewelry and handbags. To me it’s not so important to buy one brand or another, as it is to buy the things I really love, and that I won’t feel guilty about if they turn out to be one-month wonders.
IHH: What’s the secret to looking trendy this fall without overdoing it?
LP: My best advice is to look to the runways, magazines, blogs, or your favorite celebrities for inspiration towards a general look or feel for an outfit, but never try to recreate it exactly. The best thing about personal style is that it’s personal! Let your own tastes shine through. But I think the most important thing is to be comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing. If you feel self-conscious or not like yourself, other people will notice. Don’t push yourself beyond what you’re comfortable with, or tone down your style just because other people think it’s crazy, because either way you’ll look like you’re trying too hard.

What a great interview! I totally agree with having that one accessory (or many) that make you feel totally glamorous in a crowd! For me, it's my Juicy Couture sunglasses. I feel like royalty when I have them on!
