Not a One-Size-Fits-All Approach: Job Interview Attire
One of the places in the world where your self-esteem can take a good beating is during a job interview. We are looking to make a massive impression but when there’s an interview we can feel a significant amount of stress. So when it comes to making a good impression we’ve got to dress for the scenario. Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to dressing for the perfect job interview. Ultimately, you need to tailor your choices of clothing to the type of interview and the type of business so you can fit into the company and its culture. With this in mind, what are the best ways to style yourself depending on the job?
An Internship Interview
It’s an important part of developing your career, so you need to dress the part. It all depends on the type of company you are working for. If the business is informal, black pants and a white shirt will be perfect. If the company is a more informal relaxed start-up you can be more creative and casual. You can make your outfits look professional and smart without seeming stuffy. You can think about the little things that are a little extra, such as nude lipstick just to keep you on the right side of stylish.
An Informal Interview
We can make the mistake of heading to an interview in loungewear if they talk about an “informal, casual” environment. You still need to appear neat! Dressing up a little using a blouse with a pair of pants or having a pencil skirt is the right side of casual but informal.
A Business Interview
Business dress code is all about the most basic. This is not the place to show off your favorite fashion trends. Office appropriate attire such as a pencil skirt or tailored pants with a shirt or blazer is ideal if ultimately, a plain choice. However, you can structure your designs and get up just as long as it is suitable for your office environment. You may think dark gray or navy a little on the dull side, but they look significantly better than black, making it a perfect way for you to stand out.
A Video Interview
We still need to look sophisticated. Of course, the temptation for most people to get away with the bare minimum to wear loungewear. But you have got to be careful especially in terms of how you angle the camera. If the interviewer catches a glimpse of sweatpants, you will not likely get the job. Also, choose plain clothes, rather than things that are distracting. Go for a similar approach to business attire to make the best impression.
A Formal Interview
Neutral colors are where you will thrive. Choosing white, black, or gray are perfect choices for formal interviews. Incorporating a striped or checked pattern is another way to guarantee you are dressed up but going beyond the traditional basic officewear.
As you can see, there are many subtle levels to guarantee you are making the best impression. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach.
