We just love store owner/style expert (of ARCADE Boutique in L.A.) Rochelle Gores Fredston here at I Heart Heels, so we were ecstatic to find out she’s a mama-to-be! Squeal!! Obvi, we jumped at asking her a few questions about dressing chicly during pregnancy…enjoy!
I Heart Heels: We wanna know first and foremost a few of your pregnancy fashion staples? (It’s so hard trying to dress chic, no?)
Rochelle Gores Fredston: Yes, it’s very hard to dress chic! However, it’s very important during your pregnancy to love how you look.
Black Sundress: This is a must! A loose-fitting sundress is comfortable and fabulous. You can dress this up with a great accessory or wear it casual. [Tip: To get you through your pregnancy, buy 2-3 sizes larger than you regularly wear.]
Example: Velvet Sundress from Bloomingdales (www.bloomingdales.com)
Ballet Flats: They’re cute and chic! A great alternative to heels while your balance is a bit off. This is also a fun way to add some color to your outfit. [Tip: Buy maroon, gold or navy.]
Example: Bloch Ballet Flat (www.endless.com)
Accessories: They will make your outfit! I prefer longer necklaces that hit above the belly. This will help lengthen your face and torso.
Example: T. Cyia Flat Long Chain (www.arcadeboutique.com)
Maternity Jeans: To get you through your second trimester purchase 1-2 sizes larger and if you want to get through your entire term, purchase 2-3 sizes larger. My favorite is J Brand. [I really like the jeans with the half or full belly band.] The band gives you that little support you need!
Example: J Brand Secret Fit Belly Skinny Leg Maternity Jeans (A Pea In The Pod Collection,
www.apeainthepod.com)
A loose-flowing top: A good loose-flowing top paired with skinny jeans is a key look. The great thing is that you can still see your cute bump, but it’s still a flattering look. [Tip: Layer it with a long maternity tank.
Maternity tank: There are two maternity tanks that are my staples. One is from Isabella and Oliver. This one is extra-long to help layer under tops. It provides a slimming illusion to your hips and thighs. The second one I love is the spaghetti-strap seamless maternity tank from A Pea in the Pod. This is great for anything cut a little too long.
Example: Extra-Long Tank by Isabella and Oliver (www.isabellaoliver.com); Spaghetti Strap Seamless Maternity Cami (www.apeainthepod.com) Long cardigan: Stay away from shorter cardigans as they can shorten your body and give a frumpier look.
Example: DKNY Long Cardigan (www.bloomingdales.com)
Scarf: This is a great way to add color and pattern to any outfit. Also, having a scarf hanging down your body can cover the belly and give you a slimmer appearance.
Example: Sir Alistair Raj Scarf (www.arcadeboutique.com)
Makeup: Take the time to put on a little mascara and lip gloss. It will make you feel beautiful and happy. Remember, making you happy means making your baby happy!
Lingerie: A great maternity bra and maternity panties puts ease to the daunting task of getting dressed. When wearing black or white [since you can’t wear a strapless bra], pair a black or white maternity bra underneath. The straps will disappear into your tank or dress.
IHH: How do you like to accessorize now that you have a baby bump?
RGF: Necklaces are key! I really love longer necklaces that hit right above the belly. Also, long chandelier earrings and bangles complement the baby bump. Stay away from shorter necklaces because they are not as flattering on a pregnant frame.
IHH: Do you still wear heels and, if so, how long do you plan to wear them? What are some fashionable alternatives?
RGF: I have gone more to flats since becoming pregnant. It’s important to be both comfortable and safe. However, a great alternative would be a short wedge or thicker kitten heel which happens to be a great trend right now. This is a great time to rock a fabulous pair of flats!
IHH: What does ARCADE Boutique carry that might be a good fit for chic mamas-to-be?
RGF:
• ARCADE Label micro modal leggings
• Elaine Kim long cardigans
• Long necklaces by T.Cyia
• Scarves by Sir Alistair Rai
• Large-brimmed hats by Eugenia Kim
IHH: You dress a lot of celebrities, so whose style do you really dig?
RGF: Victoria Beckham. She’s always poised and confident. She does a great job of sultry meets classy.
IHH: Name one maternity fashion “DO” and one “DON’T GO THERE.”
RGF: “DO”: Accessorize and feel fabulous every day!
“DON’T GO THERE”: Don’t go too tight or too loose. Choose a style that flows with your new beautiful figure. [Tip: You don’t want to look like you’re wearing a tent or a leotard!]
